Electro-Dermal Screening (EDS) is another screening tool used by a growing number of natural health practitioners throughout the world. An electronic instrument measures the galvanic skin resistance at specific acupuncture points on the fingers and toes which correspond to different organs, systems and functions of the body. The instrument reading provides an indication of the health of the corresponding organ, system or function. The testing is non-invasive and painless. EDS can also be used to screen for food and environmental sensitivities and to test for product effectiveness. The biggest advantage of this technique is in helping decide which product, or even which brand of a product, is likely to be most effective for you. The EDS instrument used at the Rosetown Natural Health Centre is BioCheck by Vibrant Health. For more information on the use of EDS see the website by Best Health Centre. A more detailed description of EDS can be found in the website of the American Association of Acupuncture and Bio-Energetic Medicine. For Stephen Barrett's viewpoint on EDS see his Quackwatch website. [If Barrett had been living in Vienna in the 1860's he would have led the physicians' attack against Ignaz Semmelweis the Hungarian doctor who dared to suggest that doctors' failing to wash their hands before assisting in childbirth could possibly have something to do with the high rate of maternal mortality from childbed fever].
Hair Analysis is another screening technique offered at the Rosetown Natural Health Centre. Hair Analysis provides a measurement of relative levels of elements including trace minerals such as chromium and zinc and heavy metals such as lead and mercury which can affect your health. A one gram sample of hair is taken usually from the nape of the neck (it can be taken in narrow horizontal rows so it won't show) and sent to Anamol Laboratories Ltd in Toronto for mass spectrometer analysis. The most common request is for analysis of all 30 elements. The results come by mail in about two weeks. For more information on this technique see the Trace Mineral Systems Hair Mineral Analysis website or the Trace Minerals Inc. FAQ web page.
